Off the Ranch

Off The Ranch is a new category for this Blog where we’ll extend beyond our normal format and point out some of the interesting subjects and personalities around the blogosphere.  Hopefully, they’ll have a relatable quality to what we’re doing here at Deadwood Blog.

Lee Goldberg has a great blog about his “Writing Life”; he covers many interesting topics regarding his career as a novelist and writer in Hollywood, but his category “In The Trades Today” is a quick breakdown of current “industry” news, and I think you guys might find it useful.

Sam’s Run: Homeward Bound

UPDATE: Sam just called and he is only a few hours away from home.  He’ll have a great many stories to share about his journey into wind and rain swept Louisiana, and he’s brought back some mighty uplifting video interviews with the good-hearted folks of Jefferson Davis Parish. It has been a serendipitous sojourn for Sam; perhaps, when we’re able to hear the graceful strength of those devestated, they can help us far more than we can help them. So welcome back to Cali, Sam. Good Job, Well Done!

Kenny & Chelsea Doll

Kenny (Malloy) Doll works on the show; he also manages his daughter Chelsea’s new singing career.  For the past few weeks, he’s been telling us about her recent success, and we want to share it as well.  First off, it’s a pleasure to be around Kenny, he is so very proud of Chelsea, and if you visit her personal website, you’ll see that he’s on her list of favorite people too–their father/daughter relationship is great to see.  And here’s a link to the Music Website

Now Availible at iTunes

From CD Baby:
Born and raised in Hollywood, Chelsea grew up listening to everything from Frank Sinatra to Marc Bolan.

And soon enough, she was sucked into the tempting world of rock n’ roll. But Chelsea Doll didn’t just listen to musicians…they were over her dad’s house everyday. By the age of twelve, she was writing songs of her own. At fourteen, she decided she was serious about her music and started recording. With Tommy Triant, a former member of Soul Kid #1, as her guitarist and Sean Fodor on lead; they recorded Chelsea Doll’s first single.

“Va Va Va Voom” was originally written and performed by Brett Smiley in 1973. Brett, being a good friend of Chelsea’s father, was delighted to have his song covered. Brett’s album, Breathlessly Brett, was produced by Andrew Loog Oldham in ‘74 but wasn’t released until 2003.

Chelsea’s version of “Va Va Va Voom” became an instant favorite for KROQ dj, Rodney Bingenheimer in Los Angeles and WBAI dj, Delphine Blue in New York. London, England also took a liking to Chelsea Doll’s sound and started playing her in Glam-ou-rama and other glitter rock clubs.

Excuse Me, Your Dog Is Ringing.

Brief update on Sam’s Run since the neighbor’s dog ate his phone; okay, the dog didn’t really eat the phone, he just chewed on it until it was….unrecognizable!

Also, the Jennings Daily News is still planning on relaying some photos to post; we haven’t received them yet.

Now the update!  Sam has been pounding nails, fixing floors, and taping interviews around the Parish.  He has met with the Mayor (as well as others-see updates below) recently, and Sam is incredibly impressed with the sturdiness of the folks in town.  He has some people back here in Los Angeles who want to help him put together a documentary from the digital tape he’s compiling; Sam thinks it will be a great take on the beautiful strength of the American (human) Spirit.

Oh, one more thing, he should have a new phone soon.

…more updates to follow.

Fond Farewell

A Fond Farewell
Posted by Marc Meadow

We’re glad to hear things are shapin’ up in Jennings (See Post Below)

As you may know, we are about to lose our hardworking DGA trainee, JoAnn Lowrie. Her last day will be Wednesday, October 19th. Now, everyone works hard on the set, that is for certain. But I’d like to know the last time any of us had to deal with an average of 100 mangy,  pissin’ and  moanin’ guys as we background may be on any givin’ day. So, to show our appreciation for watchin’ our backs and all her hard work, I have purchased a small gift of thanks.

Now, I am perfectly happy to bestow it on my behalf, but it occurred to me that some of you might care to add your blessings to the gesture.  I bought a box of 30 handcrafted holiday cards including self-sealing foil wrapped envelopes.  Here is a picture of the card:

The sentiment on the card reads: “Season’s Greetings and Best Wishes for a Wonderful New year”

I am not asking for any contribution to add your name to the gift.  I suppose we would have to get a large card to each sign our name upon.  I just want to be certain that the gift is there for her on that Wednesday or earlier as appropriate.  Any suggestions?

OF COURSE IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT THIS IS A SURPRISE!  LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS–

Sam’s Run Arrives in Jefferson Davis Parish

It was a 15-hour day on the set yesterday; I apologize for not getting an update listed sooner–but here it is.

Welcome to Jennings

Sam has arrived in Jennings, Louisiana, and after he got things situated with his son and family, Sam received a warm welcome around town.  He met with Sheriff Ricky, the Jennings Daily News, and Darrell Crochet (a local cooking show host who cooked for 20,000 after Katrina hit). Sam and Darrell have partnered for a day of video interviews with some local folks on Friday and we’ll try to get some footage posted.  As well, the Paper is emailing some photos and they’ll be posted ASAP. Lastly, Sam is very thankful for all those helping out, and as everyone knows, the areas hit by hurricanes will need help for years to come.
